The River Thames flows west to east along the northern edge of Reading, with the heart of the city centre found between the River Kennet and Reading Train Station. The city centre streets are Castle Street which turns into Gun Street and then Minster Street (where The Oracle Shopping Centre is located) and Bridge Street, which turns into St Mary's Butts and then West Street. Friar Street runs parallel to Broad Street, one block to the north, and Broad Street connects West Street with Minster Street.
The Forbury Gardens are east of Friar Street, near the Museum of Reading. The Hexagon is off the Oxford Road past the Renaissance Hotel. The railway station is north of the city centre, a block north of Friar Street. It is a five-minute walk from the station to The Oracle Shopping Centre.
The Oracle Shopping and Leisure Complex, beside the River Kennet, boasts over 90 shops including a flagship Boots store, Disney, Mango and Muji. Debenhams and House of Fraser are in The Oracle while you can find John Lewis and Marks & Spencer on Broad Street. The Virgin Megastore is at the junction of Oxford Road and St Mary's Butts.
The city centre's other main shopping areas are the Broad St Mall (T.K. Maxx, Argos) and the Edwardian Harris Arcade (computer games, ethnic arts, kites). Antique shops and bookshops cluster on Merchants Place.
Reading has a Farmers Market on the first and third Saturday of each month. It takes place in Great Knollys Street off Caversham Road.
The Oracle boasts a waterside strip of European-style restaurants which are particularly pleasant in summer. These include Ken Hom's Yellow River, the Ha!Ha!Bar, Nando's and Old Orleans. Upmarket places include the restaurants in the Renaissance and Millennium Hotels along with Loch Fyne, off Bridge Street and the London Street Brasserie. A wide choice of cuisines are on offer with Indian, Thai, Chinese and Italian restaurants found in King's Walk in the city centre and on Prospect Road in Caversham, north of Reading Bridge. Expect to pay less than 10 per head for a pub lunch/curry, while a more upmarket three-course meal will set you back between 30-40 per head.Prior booking at weekends and during the summer months is recommended. Dress code is casual except in very upmarket places where it is wise to dress up to fit in.
