Southampton is a great place to explore, with a rich heritage, superb sea front, award winning art galleries and museums, and plenty of parks and gardens to enjoy. It is ideally situated for exploring some of England's most breathtaking coast and countryside. Southampton is also home to some of the world's most prestigious maritime events.
Southampton has entered the new Millennium as the region's leisure and cultural capital. It has recently secured funding in the form of a massive cash injection from the National Lottery to improve parks and sports facilities in the city. With key international events, countless new pubs, clubs and places to eat, and the region's principal arts and entertainments venues, Southampton is the South's leading leisure destination.
The High Street runs north to south through the heart of the city centre (north of Bargate it is known as Above Bar Street). Castle Way runs parallel to the High Street turning into Portland Terrace north of Bargate. West Quay is located off here, just south of Marlands Shopping Centre and the coach station.
Directly north of Marlands Shopping Centre is the Civic Centre, the Guildhall, the Library and Southampton Art Gallery. The central rail station is due west of the Civic Centre past the Mayflower Theatre and five minutes' walk north-west of the High Street.
The seven restored Victorian parks stretch from the Civic Centre in the north down to Bargate in the south. St Mary's Stadium is east of the city centre, close to the River Itchen. The Ocean Village Marina (Harbour Lights Picture House, shops, cafés, restaurants) is a 15-minute walk due south, and is located east of the Eastern Docks. The Hall of Aviation is two blocks to the north of the marina. Southampton Common is a 30-minute walk west of the town centre.
The High Street runs all the way to Town Quay Marina where ther ferry terminals for Hythe and the Isle of Wight are located. Nearby on Bugle Street is the Maritime Museum, adjacent to Mayflower Park. West of here are the Western Docks.
